Let's start with a premise that I don't think a lot of Americans are aware of. We have 5% of the world's population; we have 25% of the world's known prison population. We have an incarceration rate in the United States, the world's greatest democracy, that is five times as high as the average incarceration rate of the rest of the world. There are only two possibilities here: either we have the most evil people on earth living in the United States; or we are doing something dramatically wrong in terms of how we approach the issue of criminal justice. . .

Or maybe we actually have the ability to solve and prosecute crimes? Do you really think we have less criminals than say, any Sub-Saharan, Central Asian, or Eastern European country?

Some that have a lower incarceration rate is probably due to stricter punishment laws (ie, caning someone instead of jail), or not reporting the incarceration (China)

We certainly aren't perfect, and while there does seem to be more "guilty until proven innocent" mentality, I think our system is actually TOO lenient. That's why we have such a high repeat-offender rate; jail is *too* nice. They get free food, clothes, medical care, college education, roof over their head, etc. Then they get released, can't hack it and commit a new crime just so they can go back to jail on purpose! Insane.

And don't get me started on the process for Death Sentences. TEN YEARS (or more!) on Death Row? That's ridiculous. Maybe if sentence was carried out within 30 days, people might actually believe they would pay for their crime. Right now, it's a joke. You can kill someone and be reasonably sure you won't pay for it.

Somebody commits a crime, and then *I* have to pay for the criminal's welfare for the next 20+ years? BULLSHIT. Criminals are treated better than the homeless or mentally ill.

Clearly more executions are in order.

. . . well, er, what do you expect when everything's illegal?
